STOLEN MIATA

Post by Scott »

My car was getting the final painting touches put on it at a local shop when someone broke into the shop and stole it along with some other stuff sometime between Thursday after 6pm and this morning at 11am when the shop owner called me. Be on the look out for a caged freshly painted white Miata for sale......

Damn. So sorry to hear this Scott. Was the car insured? I'll keep my eye on Craigslist and send you anything 'fishy' that surfaces...

Dang dude, sorry to hear its a loss for oyu man. A lot of time and money I am sure went into prepping the car. Is there any policy that hte shop has to cover customer cars under thier care?

Any video availabe from them or local business's? You should check it out and see if there is any.

Do you have any pictures of the car now.

I haven't seen the car yet, but I know it was torched, along with a couple of others. The car was not insured, and the shop had signs everywhere stating that it is no responsible for lost/stolen items. I'll cross that bridge tomorrow

If you have a family member/friend who's a lawyer I'd run this entire scenario by them. Despite the signs, I personally feel the shop is responsible. You were bringing them business (getting your car painted) and the car was stolen while in their possession.

+1 Sounds pretty shaddy if it was more than just your car.

Scott,

Sorry to hear about this. I spent my entire life working towards running a team in SCCA World Challenge and finally got there last year only to run 5 races and have every thing I owned race-wise stolen in Detroit, MI. With my multiple insurance policies I only lost about $300k.

A reputable shop should have some type of insurance policy for this type of situation. Check with your insurance company to see if they can do anything. Post any info you have about the theft on as many websites as you can to keep people aware of the situation. Maybe someone saw something. Stay in constant touch with law enforcement to see what they are doing and if there is any news.

I hope they catch the person that did this and punish then accordingly. In my case they caught someone in posession of a large quantity of my stolen items. He said that he had purchased the items from "someone whom he could not remember." The police did absolutely nothing.....said he was not guilty of any crime. I have recovered about $40k worth of stuff and I have a lawsuit against the guy to help him remember. If he cannot remember he will be working to pay me for the rest of his life.

Good luck!

UPDATE: I have a check in hand from the shop owner which covered what I had in the car (plus a little over....) On the down side, I am now many months behind in my Spec build, so I am currently in the market for a build Spec Miata (or close to completed car)

That is great news Scott. Glad you got your money out of it. At least its not a total loss now.

The resolution was nice, but I am WAY behind in building. The plan was to have the car ready for the fall SCCA school. The other part is that I still haven't explained it to the wife....(you finally said that it was ok if I started building a car, but in reality I already had the cage done on this one....)
