Update on the Civic.
Well I got the trans off yesterday. I didnt take the clutch off, i just visually inspected it through the pressure plate fingers. I was expecting (more like hoping) to see broken fingers or some kind of apparent damage but didnt see any.
So I got the head off earlier today. To my amazement there is no physical damage to the head, pistons, valves, etc. I called it a night once I got the head off.
So tomarrow Im going to remove the clutch to inspect the frictions and flywheel surface. I may also start taking the head apart to measure the valve springs, it may show the possibility of floating valves.
I took some pictures too. I'll update some more tomarrow.
Motor has 103,xxx miles.

Well the clutch, pressure plate & flywheel are all toast. The clutch wore down to the rivets and then wore into p.p & flywheel. You can actually feel the groove that wore into both of them.

Well im hoping thats all it was also. Fortunatly this still doesnt justify the sound of the fast repeated cluncky noise that I was hearing. Kinda had to be there to understand the pattern of the noise.Chiketkd wrote:Glad it was the clutch & flywheel and not the engine Shawn! Hope she's back on the road asap!!!!
Im actually considering just doing a oem rebuild, seals, bearings, rings, etc. Since its not very expensive and I have everything I need to rebuild the motor.

I can work on practically anything. Only thing that Mazda has that I dont work on is the Rotary. I have 0 experince with Rotaries. But I doubt there is one inyour MiataScott wrote:do you work on Miata's?
Im also half tempted to check the trans just as a precaution. Because I have replaced it once already because I broke the diff in it 2 years ago.
edit: This was 2 years ago. I broke the pinion gears in 4 places, thenthe broke teeth got caught between the ring gear and the clutch housing, impailing the tooth into the housing and causing a crack the size of my pinky finger through the housing. Leaked out all the fluid.
Luckily I had a spare trans, everything in it was destroyed but the diff was still good. So I swapped the pinion gears and put everythign back together.
